INVECTIVES

This is the second lesson that directly comes from requests of students of the Golic languages. We had not planned to deal with this subject beyond a paragraph in the grammar introduction, but a number of people have shown interest in them, so we have put this lesson online for informational purposes only. We will not deal with them more on our site.

This lesson has to do with the use and formation of "invectives" in Traditional and Modern Golic Vulcan. Invectives are basically a way to "vulgarize" words and are extremely rare in contempory usage because of the distaste Vulcans feel in their use and even existence. They encompass the grammatical use in FSE of "darn", "damn", and even more vulgar words in adjectivally. Use of them in speech now does not fit with the logical lifestyle and control of emotions that Vulcans embrace. In the pre-Surak world, their usage was common, but today they are only used by those who do not follow Surak's teachings, outlaws, those undergoing a difficult pon farr, by the criminally insane, etc. Never use them in speech with most Vulcans or you may find yourself being subjected to a mental health evaluation! Because of their distaste, Vulcans may refer to this type of speech as "Gutter Mode", if they speak of it at all. They are formed by prefixing nouns like true adjectives and come in two forms: Mild Invective and Severe Invective.


Mild Invectives

Mild invectives are formed by prefixing the noun modified with " khr~ " before a vowel sound and " khra~ " before a consonant sound. For example, "The darn sehlat is bothering me" would be >Ertau khrasehlat nash-veh< (lit. "Bothers darn sehlat this-one"). Or, "The damn moon is blinding us!" would be >Glan-famau khraikum etek..< (lit. "Blinds damn moon us!"). The stress of the noun remains the same as it was without the mild invective prefix.


Severe Invectives
Wahdzh-Guhras-Zhitlar

Severe invectives are formed by prefixing the noun modified with " khrikh~ " before a vowel sound and " khrikha~ " before a consonant sound. For example, "The @#$%& le-matya killed half of our jarels!" would be >Stal khrikhale-matya ulef t'dzharellar t'etek..< (lit. "Killed @#$%& le-matya half of-jarels of-us!). Or, "The @#$%& weather is lousy today!" would be >Nam-tor khrikhigen-va knuk nash-gad..< (lit. "Is @#$%& weather lousy today!").


Notes
Pitohlar

1. Mild invectives are equivalent to FSE adjectival constructions using words such as "dang", "darn", "damn", "bloody", etc.

2. Severe invectives are equivalent to FSE adjectival constructions that use scatological words and other vulgarities.


There are no exercises for this lesson.

The student is encouraged to experiment creating invectives and try using them in sentences.
