Vulcans of all ages have long had a fascination with the literary works of other worlds. The His Dark Matters Trilogy by Philip Pullman, comprised of Northern Lights (a.k.a. The Golden Compass), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, from the late 20th Century C.E., has entertained people across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants for centuries. The Golden Compass was made into a 2007 movie, although the other books were never filmed. Many blame the starring young actress for the failure of the movie at the box office despite excellent visual effects. It is impossible to like a character and want to see more of them in the future when they display arrogance or a bad attitude for an entire movie.

The books take place on several parallel Earths. Central character Lyra's home Earth is somewhat behind the Earth we know in many ways, although they do have limited atomic technology, are superior with things such airships (they have no airplanes or helicopters) and once constructed alethiometers, which are powered by Dust. They possess little in the way of electronics, so there are no radios, televisions, computers or cell phones. The lack of certain technology was the result of restrictions by the Church in the past and the Magisterium in the present.

The biggest differences between Lyra's Earth and ours are that a person's soul is outside their body in the form of a dæmon, certain animals are intelligent and can speak (e.g. the armored bears of the North), and her planet has a very different history with an England but no United States or Russia as we know them. The many differences are one of the things that make the books so interesting. The most important thing in the books is the dæmon, the external manifestation of a person's soul, which takes the form of an animal. Variable as a child, the dæmon settles on a permanent form by late childhood. The form of the dæmon often is related to the occupation or type of person. For example, many servants have a dog for a dæmon, while witches have some sort of bird and Samoyeds have a wolf. The armoured bears and other intelligent animals do not have dæmons. Although the dæmon seems to have a life of its own, it is an integral part of the person it is belongs to and has its own name. Those few people who have been forced to undergo intercision (permanent separation of a person from their dæmon) appear psychologically damaged.
